The North Shore is one of the most dog-friendly stretches of coastline in New England — the towns are historic, the beaches are accessible, and most of the local restaurant and brewery scene welcomes leashed dogs on patios. This is the guide we send to clients of our Lynnfield boarding home who want to actually do something with their dog instead of just walking the same loop.
It's organized by category — coastal towns, beaches, hikes, restaurants and breweries, shopping. For just off-leash and fenced parks, see our companion best dog parks on the North Shore guide.
Coastal towns worth a day trip
Marblehead
One of the most dog-friendly historic centers in Massachusetts. Narrow streets, harbor views, and several cafes and ice cream stops with leashed-dog outdoor seating. Pair a downtown walk with an off-season visit to Devereux Beach.
Salem
Yes — Salem is dog-friendly year-round, not just the obvious Halloween chaos. The Common is great for leashed walks, the Willows have harbor views, and Notch Brewing's outdoor beer garden welcomes dogs. October is busy but plenty doable; spring and early summer are quietest.
Beverly Farms & Pride's Crossing
Quieter than Marblehead and Salem. Tuck's Point and Lynch Park offer leashed walks with ocean views. Less commercial, more residential — a good choice if your dog gets overwhelmed by crowds.
Manchester-by-the-Sea
The smallest of the coastal towns on this list, but worth it specifically for Singing Beach during the off-season dog window. Quaint downtown, a few patios that welcome dogs, and easy parking outside summer peak.
Rockport
Halibut Point State Park is the highlight — coastal granite trails on leash, dramatic ocean overlooks, and a former quarry that's now a mirror-still pond. Bear Skin Neck downtown can get crowded in summer; off-season visits are calmer.
Beaches with dog access
- Singing Beach, Manchester-by-the-Sea — off-leash hours during the off-season window. One of the prettiest beaches on the coast.
- Devereux Beach, Marblehead — off-leash access in the off-season; leashed access in season.
- Crane Beach, Ipswich — historically allowed off-leash access in winter months; check current Trustees rules before going.
- Plum Island — limited leashed beach access outside of piping plover nesting season.
Beach rules change year to year and can be enforced strictly during nesting season (April through August in most places). Always check current town or refuge rules before driving out.
Hikes and conservation trails
Beyond the parks listed in our North Shore parks guide:
- Lynn Woods Reservation — 2,200 acres, leashed trails, the biggest hiking option north of Boston.
- Halibut Point State Park (Rockport) — short coastal loops, big visual payoff.
- Bradley Palmer State Park (Topsfield) — wide, flat carriage paths perfect for leashed walks year-round.
- Ravenswood Park (Gloucester) — Trustees property with miles of woodland trails.
Restaurants and breweries with dog patios
Patio rules in Massachusetts give individual restaurants discretion to allow dogs in outdoor seating. The following spots have a track record of being dog-friendly during patio season — but call ahead during shoulder months to confirm:
- Notch Brewing (Salem) — large outdoor beer garden, dog water bowls, very welcoming.
- Cafes around Marblehead Town Center — multiple options for outdoor coffee with your dog.
- Marketstreet Lynnfield patios — most outdoor seating welcomes leashed dogs in warmer months.
- Salem and Beverly downtown patios — many casual restaurants accommodate dogs at outdoor tables.
General etiquette: ask the host before sitting, keep your dog under your chair (not in the aisle), bring water, and leave if your dog can't settle. The more well-behaved dogs that show up, the more places stay dog-friendly.
Shopping with your dog
Open-air shopping centers like MarketStreet Lynnfield generally welcome leashed dogs walking through the outdoor areas. Independent boutiques in Marblehead, Salem, and Beverly are often dog-friendly — watch for water bowls outside as a green light. National pet retailers (PetSmart, Petco) all allow leashed dogs inside.
Seasonal events
North Shore towns run dog-friendly events through the year — pet costume parades around Halloween in Salem, seasonal markets in Marblehead and Beverly, and dog-friendly farmers' markets in summer. Check town websites and local event calendars for current schedules.
What to bring
- Water and a collapsible bowl — most patios will refill for you, but it's not guaranteed.
- Bags, doubled.
- Tick prevention — high across the North Shore April through November.
- A short leash for restaurant and shopping trips — long lines are for trails, not patios.
- A towel in the car for beach trips.
When you're traveling and your dog isn't coming
Some of these places are seasonal day trips. When you're doing one of the longer outings — Provincetown, Maine, Vermont — and the dog isn't coming, our cage-free Boston boarding covers both Seaport and Lynnfield with overnight staff, daily updates, and structured enrichment.
Rules change. Off-leash hours, beach access windows, and patio policies update season to season. Always confirm with the town, the property, or the restaurant before a first visit.
